Edward R. Morrow (David Strathairn) é um âncora de TV que, em plena era do macarthismo, luta para mostrar em seu jornal os dois lados da questão. Para tanto ele revela as táticas e mentiras usadas pelo senador Joseph McCarthy em sua caça aos supostos comunistas. O senador, por sua vez, prefere intimidar Morrow ao invés de usar o direito de resposta por ele oferecido em seu jornal, iniciando um grande confronto público que trará consequências à recém-implantada TV nos Estados Unidos.
